Content Interpretation: The surgical treatment for atrial fibrillation (AF) is well established and performed. AF is being treated as a stand-alone procedure or concomitantly with valve, coronary bypass, or other types of cardiac surgical procedures. This document was put together to provide 10 recommendations for 7 research questions. Key consensus: 1, Catheter ablation and surgical ablation both are mature and important treatment option for AF patients who chose a rhythm control strategy. 2, Factors such as efficacy, risks and alternatives of ablation must be considered when choosing catheter ablation or surgical ablation. Patient preferences and values are important considerations. Consensus proposed catheter and surgical ablation indications. 3, Main indication for AF ablation is the presence of AF-related symptoms. Usually, ablation should be considered after at least 1 antiarrhythmic drug has been administrated and proved to be ineffective or poorly tolerated. 4, The hope of discontinuing anticoagulation is not an indication for atrial fibrillation ablation. For AF patients with high risk of stroke, anticoagulation is required after ablation. Complications of catheter ablation include stroke and TIA. Preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative anticoagulation should be given to minimize these risks.
